Canadian Economy, Labor, And The Global World Essay

The Federal Open Market Committee report indicates a decline in output and employment. Household spending has been increasing gradually though there have been several constraints such as high unemployment rates, tight credit, and slight income growth. The United States is the biggest trading partner to Canada and economic slumps within the American economy affect the Canadian economy negatively as well. Such a decline in output will affect the Canadian economy since a decline in goods that Canada obtains from the United States will mean the country will lack them and have to find other countries to trade with. In addition, the low output will result in American businesses importing less goods from Canada that they use in the process of producing their goods. The high unemployment will affect Canadian labor based on the large number of Canadians who work in the United States. During an economic recession as this one most foreign workers lack unemployment in other countries as governments give first priority to their domestic workers first. As such, American nationals would be considered first during employment exercises while the Canadians will be left out and stay unemployed until the economy is seen to have recovered. The role of the state in a global world The worlds today is a global one with people from different countries, social backgrounds and cultures interacting on a daily basis. States are part of these interactions as well as they encompass the geographical boundaries that divide our continents into smaller units. States exist as a result of a host of reasons such as political, historical, economic, social, cultural and militaristic. States form different corners of the world are carrying out trade with one another as a result of the growth of the idea of competitive advantage that allows countries to export what they have in abundance and import what they lack. Apart from trade, there are numerous organizations and agreements around the world that have brought numerous countries together in pursuit of common goals so as to create a modern world that is safe and productive to live in. As such, a state has to find a way to effectively take part in such a global world despite having its own independent political, social, cultural, and corporate way of doing things. This requires states to come up with policies that will enable them to actively take part within the global world without compromising their independence (Plattner, 2002). This creates the need for due attention to the theoretical rationales of the state’s formation that ensure that the state remains pertinent in the global world. This is in line with the fact that domestic policies can not be made to treat the economy as a closed entity but need to consider the implications and counterbalancing effects that arise from globalization. The state has a role in the global world that is aimed at legislating its policies that protect its domestic market as well as give opportunity for its country’s participation in globalization. Labor unions in a global world Globalization has grown over the years and has now become an important part of our corporate and social lives. Labor is one of the institutions that have been greatly affected by globalization as businesses and institutions are now able to employ individuals from anywhere in the world as far as they have the required skills and knowledge needed for the job. With the growth of capitalism and international trade, most companies realized the only way to stay in business and continue making huge profits was to cut down on overall expenses and labor costs were one of the expenses cut. The growth of globalization has also lead to the development of outsourcing where businesses have some of the operations carried out by other institutions that are specialized in that field and therefore do not have to employ people to carry out those jobs internally. Most businesses are opening factories in foreign markets that have cheaper labor such as China and Indonesia. As such, labor unions have responded in order to protect their domestic workers from the increasing amount of unemployment that could result from the employment of foreign workers who could be asking for lower wages and salaries as compared to the domestic workers. Labor unions have responded to globalization by engaging in several strategies that limit the negative effects of globalization on labor. One such strategy has been the opposition towards free trade initiatives and agreements involving several countries. One such agreement has been the North American Free Trade Agreement by asking for there to be provisions within the agreement for the inclusion of a charter that would entail a number of labor principles that would be put into effect and enforced by both domestic and international courts. Secondly, labor unions have began to organize regional as well as international organizations that seek to harmonize the labor needs of their members. This is the case especially for multinational companies that operate in several countries where unions facilitate workers from the different factories in the various countries to be able to have collective bargaining of their needs (Herod, 2002). Thirdly, labor unions have been involved in the process of developing labor regulations that are incorporated in most business codes of conduct. Due to the possibility of business including legally correct phrases that could be detrimental to workers when effected and which would affect workers negatively. By have access to the policy formulation stage, unions are able to prevent the inclusion of such codes and policies that would end up leaving workers at a disadvantaged position. How the federal government responded to growing labor militancy The onset of the depression found the provincial as well as municipal governments in debt following expansion in infrastructure. This was at a time when Mackenzie was the prime minister and he held the belief that the crisis would pass thus failed to provide aid to the provinces. The federal government was reluctant in making efforts of reviving the economy that followed the depression (Robert, 2009). After the depression the government started a relief plan faced with mounting pressure from World War 1 veterans who demanded to be protected from poverty that was known as the New Deal The federal government under R. B Bennett campaigned on high tariffs as well as large scale spending. The federal government also increased welfare and assistance programs as well as programs intended to increase work opportunities. This was a move that led the federal government to more deficit (Neatby, 1963). This worsened the situation based on the fact that it caused a great number of government employees to loose their jobs as well as the cancelation of many public works projects that were underway. The federal government had a burden of the Canadian National Railway that had been highly affected by the depression. The government has as well taken over a number of railways that were bankrupt and out-of-date over the period of the world war. This increased the debt that the government had to a massive sum that was hard to be repaid at the time based on the hard financial time that the nation faced. The decrease in trade had made the Canadian National Railway to loose substantial amounts of funds a crisis that had been worsened by the depression. This created a burden for the federal government on the basis that it had to bail out the CNR baring in mind that the government was as well facing other debts. The failure of the federal government to revive the economy led to its defeat by the liberal party. The future for Keynesian economics Keynesian economics is struggling as it seems to have a dimming future. Since the 1970s when Keynesian economics faced a significant decline due to its failure as a result of the resultant high inflation rates and economic recessions, there has been an emergence of monetarism. In the 1980s, classical as well as supply-side economics have increasingly challenged the appropriateness of Keynesian economics further (Rousseas, 1986). As a result, Keynesian economists have responded to this decline and have created new schools of thought based on early Keynesian economics. These are †¢ The neoclassical Keynesianism †¢ The post-Keynesianism †¢ The new Keynesianism All these school of thoughts have emerged mainly as a response to the criticisms that new classical economists have raised against Keynesian economics (Gordon, 1990). Due to the focus on the demand side, Keynesian economics has proved to be important especially during economic revival after recessions as was witnessed after the recent 2008-2009 global recession where most affected countries engaged in Keynesian economics by providing economic stimulus packages aimed at reviving the economy again. This is based on the Keynesian view that markets usually lack a mechanism to self correct themselves and therefore government interventions are required to restore the economy once again. Spiritual Giants

Hello, my name is Tatiana Rosario for those who don’t know me. Today I’m going to be talking to you guys about spiritual giants. In another church I went to we skimmed the topic briefly and I think that’s what made me get more interested in it. I think this is a topic that should be taught to everyone especially to the youth. For the fact that we need to be able to understand and concur what is holding us back from getting closer to God and from what is holding us back from feeling his presences. As I was searching online for something to explain to me more about these giants. I came across this page and it had a list of giants that could be holding us back from God. As I read through each and every one of them I noticed that the giants listed are common and can come to us in a daily basis. Have you ever thought about the fact that Giants Are Real? â€Å"GIANTS† are not a part of your imagination or something you dream of. Problems, Pressures, pains, and persecutions are giants that we will have to face form time to time. 10 COMMON GIANTS – There is a giant of Resentment that basically means when you are feeling anger for being treated in a way you feel is unfair. If you go to Psalm 37:8 it says Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret–it leads only to evil. What this verse is saying is that when you feel that anger stop yourself and don’t worry because if you keep caring that anger with you it doesn’t get better and you donâ€⠄¢t get better. So just let it go and turn to God. I’ve had to face the giant of resentment a couple times in my life and here I am myself telling that I haven’t token it softly. I don’t know about you guys when I think something is unfair the first thing I want to do is prove the other person wrong and be like â€Å"NO it was like this† or â€Å"No this happened† and we have to learn that in a way it’s not worth it at all. What do you gain from it? 2- There is a giant of Fear if you don’t know what fear is it is being afraid of someone or something that is likely painful or dangerous. We’ve all faced fear in our life. I’ve faced fear in my life a lot and sometimes I can get over it quickly but, sometimes I go through a hard struggle too. In Isaiah 41:13 states I, the LORD your God, hold your hand; it is I who say to you, â€Å"Fear not, I will help you. † 3- Now I know this something I felt for quiet sometime and it is Loneliness. Psalm 73:23 says I am continually with You; You have taken hold of my right hand. In this verse the Lord is telling us that when we feel alone we really aren’t that he is always with us no matter what and that we are there at his side holding his hand. I never understood that till I read that verse. I always but myself in this solitary isolation and now my eyes have been open and I know it doesn’t have to be like that for me or for any of you. 4- There is also a giant of Guilt and Shame. Guilt is that fact or realization that you committed an offense. While shame is the painful feel of humiliation which is the outcome of guilt. Proverbs 18:21 says Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit- you choose. It took me a couple of minutes to understand on why this is the verse came to me but now I understand it. Sometimes we might feel guilty because of what we might say to someone and this verse explains that to annihilate this giant in front of you; you can’t just be like God take this feeling that I feel away from me you also have to put it in you so that your words be like fruit to people when you speak not poison. 5- When the mind dwells into an uncertainty over a problem is Worry, and there is a giant of worry. In 1Peter 5:7 it says Cast all anxiety on him because he cares for you. Worry is an anxiety and God is telling you that every time you feel worry or you over think something to the point of worry to put it in his hand. Why? Because he loves you and he does not want you to be focused on your troubles but on him. I have faced worry many times when driving in the car, walking from school, and even in my own home but, I know that I can’t let it get to me because then I’m letting my giant; I’m letting the devil win and we can’t do that. 6- Next there is the giant of Discouragement. Discouragement is the loss of hope in the face of an obstacle. To me this a real big giant because if we are filled with discouragement then how? How do we face the obstacles that the devil puts in place for us so we don’t get to God and we need God! We need him he is our air, he is our light and we won’t let the devil Stop us from getting to him. Psalm 69:32-33 Be encouraged, you who worship God. The LORD listens to those in need. You know what this means it means that if you are feeling discouragement why haven’t you called out to the Lord for help yet. Why? He is listening and he is there by your side why haven’t you called him yet? 7- This next giant Jealousy known as the evil eye. Showing envy. This is another giant that provokes anger. Ecclesiastes 7:9 says Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. Jealousy doesn’t only mean â€Å"Oh he likes her not me! † or â€Å"Oh she doesn’t like me she likes him! † People get jealous over material things too. Like you might want her phone, she might want her hair, and so on. Sometimes we let these things get to us so quick that it does make us foolish and to gain and earn more you first have to be content with what you have because you might not have the phone she has but, maybe you are the one that is going to make the next best-selling phone in the world. 8- 1Samuel 2:3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth. Pride is one great giant that a lot of people don’t see but it’s there. It’s good to be glad about something you did but when it all becomes too much of you. You. You. That’s not good. 9- That’s where selfishness comes in, this means that you’re only concerned for yourself. What makes you better than anyone else? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if all you have if from God, why boast as though you have accomplished something on your own 1 Corinthians 4:7 10- Okay, we’re almost done. Whenever you feel uncertain, you are feeling doubt. When you’re feeling doubt you don’t know what spiritual path you are walking through anymore. I went through a time when I was full of doubt to the point when I didn’t know if down was actually down not up. Psalm 94:19 is a great bible verse to read if you are ever feeling doubt it says Lord, when doubt fills my mind, when my heart is in turmoil, quiet me and give me renewed hope and cheer. And that’s the only way we can break these giants we might feel like we are alone but we have to keep saying and believing that God is right here next to us and all you have to do is call up to him and all your giants will be gone. Giants cause major difficulty In our lives. If you still aren’t sure on what a giant is; a giant is anything that distracts us from our focus on God. The things I mentioned can detour us; distract us; and even drain us of everything God intended us to be. It goes without saying that the giants we are fighting need to be slain and removed today. And with that being my last word I would like to thank you guys for letting me talk to you tonight.

Allpied Behavioral Analysis

According to what we have so far is that his parents are divorcing this alone can be the cause of the problem and his actions are channeled through his disruptive behavior. It is possible that Cameron has lost the ability to process information due to the nature of the stress he is expose, lack of sleep greatly reduces mental capabilities because of the lack of integration of memories. When the brain and body re not restored from the day before stress hormones like cortical are deposit in the central nervous and limbic system causing a negative reaction and can affect our memory (Seabrook, 2012). Stress is a psychological response resulting from a physical or psychological treat.Children that are exposed to several day of stressful situation (like in the case of Cameron) frequently have poor self-esteem, poor frustration tolerance, depressed mood and temper outburst. However, individual responses differ according to an array of factors, and most relate to the development of effective opining skills, resiliency, experience with stresses, and susceptibility to strong messages (Seabrook, 2012), which in Cameraman's case is what perceive in his family what triggers or active the stress response. 3) How might his intelligence be affected by his attention problems? What problems might he have in using his intelligence to adapt to school situations? In Cameron case his intelligence may not be affected however, his working memory that is the basic component of intelligence is the one being affected. Working memory is also the influences to perform on test and in schools assignments. Not only do changes in the brain directly affect psychological functions, but the training of psychological functions may produce changes in the brain as well (Matthias & Alcohol, 2010). In another word Cameron problem may lead to other concern that have nothing to do with intelligence, however, his difficulty to adapt to he school situation may lead him to peer rejection and resulting feeli ngs of depression or anxiety. Finally other risk factors such as drug and alcohol abuse, and social-cognitive deficits may be expected by his continuous behavior. 4)Propose some specific strategies/activities that you might use to help him to increase his ability to direct his attention. There are a wide range of approaches but the earlier the intervention the better changes for success in treating Cameron will have. One of the suggestions will be through parenting skill and education. However, they are getting onto a divorce so they will need help for themselves, so I will concentrate my efforts to make Cameron more susceptible to a treatment he will successfully achieve.A cognitive behavioral therapy may assist the Cameron to manage his impulsive behavior, focusing in encouraging and rewarding appropriate behavior. Social skill training to increase flexibility and improve social skills and therapy to assist with problem solving and decrease negativism. There are also few medication that may be helpful control his emotion and sudden outburst of anger but I would left that out for owe and concentrate in getting him the ability to concentrate in doing better at school by reinforcing his working memory and meta-cognition. In conclusion, many authorities have indicate that oppositional defiant disorder is more prevalent when structure in the home is out of balance, when there is either too much structure or not enough.

The Position of the Modern Woman Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Position of the Modern Woman - Essay Example However, the various feminist theories differ, to a large extent, on the sources and types of inequality suffered by women, how to tackle these inequalities and achieve equality or the extent to which gender and sexual identities should be questioned. Obviously, as with every ideology, political movement or philosophy, no single definition or idea would adequately reflect what feminism stands for (Tong, 1989). Â  Nonetheless, despite the various differences within the rank of the feminists’ movements, over the last couple of decades, their analysis and ideas have greatly contributed to society and social theory and thus have greatly improved the lives of women. Several aspects of private life associated with male/female social relationships have experienced changes and many parts of social life have been transformed as a result of the work of feminism. Although some people argue that there is still a long way to go before equality is attained between men and women, everyone agrees to the fact that major changes have been experienced towards such equality in the society (Burt and Dorney, 1993). Â  Somehow, men and women through their social actions and interactions have played a role in the changes experienced in the society, feminist theorist and writers have played the most striking roles in the changes in views and attitudes and other societal changes. Feminist theories have always been very useful in that, they tend to address the practical issues faced by women in their daily living and interaction with the society (Sydie, 1987).

My cultural identity and intercultural awareness Essay

My cultural identity and intercultural awareness - Essay Example As a native of Iran, I was accustomed to Iranian ways of thinking, feeling, reacting, dressing etc, all of which can be described as the Iranian culture based on Hofstede’s (2001) definition of culture. By nature, I am emotional and quiet, but not shy, female that loves to socialize, make friends, and self-confident as well as determined young person. My determination and focus helped me in earning admission in UK to study English Language. My experience in the UK has been very different from what it had been when I was growing up in Iran, which made me feel different about myself and my nature. Initially, I felt confused, lost, and low in confidence. Subsequently my self esteem lowered and I also started feeling disgusted and rejected because of low acceptability among my peers. The learning from intercultural awareness seems to provide solutions to the challenges that I am faced and also the answers to most of the questions that I had. With time passing in the UK, I started to realize that people around me are different and have different belief systems, behaviours, and attitudes, which probably is the UK culture. I learnt that culture and language are usually associated with unique ideologies that become the basis for judgment as well as relationship development (Piller, 2011). Judgements that are usually formed on the basis of ideologies lead to the formation of differential opinions about people from other cultures due to differences in their behaviour, attitude, personalities etc (Lewis, 2003). I can understand why it took more than two weeks for me to earn a good friend; my way of dressing clearly indicated that I was from the Middle East, which probably made my classmates to form opinions that I am from a different world and a different kind of perso n that they could not relate to. These opinions together result in stereotyping the individuals or groups based on prior knowledge and understanding related to some

What can be done about prison overcrowding Research Proposal

What can be done about prison overcrowding - Research Proposal Example it was able to come up with additional resources to build prison cells, the increase of inmates has still proven to be too overwhelming for the government to keep up with. In California, some inmates have taken to sleeping on floors because of the shortage of cells (Lake â€Å"News†). In other parts of America, the early release of prisoners has been sought by prison administrators just to ease inmate population. America has been shelling out billions of dollars to support the prison system. â€Å"State prison systems spend more than $30 billion annually, and the Bureau of Prisons budgeted $5 billion for just 182,000 federal inmates this year† (Myser â€Å"Business†). This overcrowding problem is attributed to a variety of factors, from the economic to the sociological, to the political. On an economic standpoint, the increase of poverty rates has unfortunately contributed to the increase of criminal activities. Various societal problems also encourage and breed criminal behavior. Legislative changes and new laws like mandatory life sentences, the three-strike rule, and strict parole eligibility provisions have also served to increase prison population. Without the corresponding increase in funding and in prison cells, these numbers will continue to rise. This paper will discuss some possible solutions to the problem of prison overcrowding, the viability of these solutions, the risk of unintended or undesirable consequences to these solutions, and the practical impediments that could hamper the development, approval, and implementation of the proposed solutions. Solutions to prison overcrowding that will be discussed in this paper shall focus on measures to reduce the number of prisoners and not solutions to increase the number of prison cells. These solutions will be more long-term. Increasing the number of cells will not stop prison overcrowding, especially if more inmates will keep coming in and filling up the new cells. This paper suggests changes
